The Manufacturing Process

Leaf Springs

How about a crash course on the making of leaf springs?

There are many more steps involved than what is shown but this will give you a bit of insight to the manufacturing process.

The whole process starts with you.

Orders are received by phone, fax, mail, e-mails and through the web

If one of our 23,000 blueprints doesn't cover the springs needed, we will do the design work

Manufacturing starts with shearing the steel

SAE 5160 High Alloy Spring Steel is all we use

71 different sizes are kept in stock

Steel is cut to the length called for on the blueprint

To make a nice smooth riding spring the ends must be rolled tapered. After shearing, the ends are heated and run through offset rolls

Once rolled and still hot the cup which holds the tip insert is formed in the end of the leaf

Eyes are formed over the correct size mandrel

Plates are heated to 1650 degrees then formed over patterns to the correct shape and arch

After being heat treated the leaves are shot-peened to remove stress and lengthen it's working life

The next step is to install bushings and final assembly.

Then off to the customer
